Packing:
I
cannot
stress
enough
the
need
to
pack
as
efficiently
as
possible.
Almost
every
hunter
who
travels
to
Alaska
for
the
first
time
comes
with
twice
the
amount
of
clothing
and
accessories
than
they
would
ever
need.
This
not
only
unnecessarily
overloads
and
bulks
out
the
light
aircraft
and/or
boats
you
will
be
traveling
in,
but
also
becomes
a
burden
to
you
in
the
field.
Be
lean,
be
efficient,
be
a
hunter.
Do
not
pack
every
item
you
have
ever
ordered
in
your
life
from
Cabela's
just
because
you
might
finally
get
a
chance
to
use
it.
If
you
are
not
sure
you
will
need
it,
chances
are
you
should
leave
it
behind.
Bring
quality
gear
not
quantity.
Choose
clothing
items
that
may
be
layered
for
warmth.
Choose
breathable
wind
and
water
proof
outer
garments
to
be
worn
over
moisture
wicking
and
insulating
undergarments.
All
clothing
should
be
of
synthetic,
wool
or
wool-synthetic
blends.
Cotton
should
be
avoided,
it
has
little
value
when
wet.
Excessive
clothing
quickly
adds
weight
and
bulk
to
your
pack.
Keep
in
mind
that
items
can
be
washed
in
the
field
if
necessary.
On
a
ten
day
hunt,
three
changes
of
cloths
should
be
more
than
efficient. We
limit
hunters
to
no
more
than
75
pounds
of
personal
gear
per
person.
This
does
not
include
the
weight
of
your
rifle
or
additional
food
cooler
that
you
may
bring
on
an
outfitted
hunt.
The
most
efficient
and
experienced
hunters
often
show
up
with
less
than
40
pounds
of
gear
per
man.
Strive
for
the
forty
pound
mark
rather
than
adding
gear
to
reach
the
75
pound
mark.
You
will
also
want
to
check
with
your
commercial
airlines
to
see
what
they
allow
for
weight
and
number
of
bags.
Pack
for
temperature
extremes
between
0°F
and
50°F.
Average
September
temperatures
will
be
from
30°F
at
night
to
45°F
during
the
day.
Expect
wind
and
rain. Rather than one large bag, pack in two to three small to medium soft sided duffle bags. These may be strapped together or placed into one larger duffle to comply with piece restrictions on your commercial airline. Smaller bags are easier to organize, carry and pack in light aircraft and/or boats. Waterproof bags are highly recommended. Hard gun cases will be required for your commercial airline flight. These will be unpacked and stored with us prior to your flight into the field. A clean change of clothing and other items not necessary for your hunt may also be stored with us.
Shipping:
Due
to
strict
baggage
restrictions
now
imposed
on
commercial
flights,
we
recommend
you
mail
the
majority
of
your
gear
to
us
in
Galena,
prior
to
your
hunt.
With
the
bulk
of
your
gear
out
of
the
way
you
should
be
able
to
travel
with
your
gun
case
and
one
small
carry
on
bag
(your
day
pack)
for
your
trip
to
Galena.
Keep
your
coat,
boots
and
one
change
of
hunt
clothing
out
of
your
shipped
bag.
These
you
can
wear
while
you
travel. Joe
Schuster Clearly mark packages with your Name, Return Address and the words "Hold For Pick Up". We will pick your bags up when they arrive in Galena and have them waiting for you at our base camp. Reversing the mailing process, from Galena, to get your gear home may allow you to carry on antlers or a meat box as baggage rather than paying the more costly shipping charges on those items. |
